The Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding’. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. In February 2014 the Government pledged to commit funding for its Primary PE and Sport Premium to 2020, with £750m to be invested over the course of the next parliament. in 2017 the Government announced it was doubling its funding at £320 million per annum for academic year 2017/2018. It has since announced that the academic year 2018/2019 will continue to have double the amount of finding.
The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils, in the 2019 to 2020 academic year, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
