At Mudeford Junior School we alternate between teaching Art and Design Technology, in half termly blocks. The children learn about three main areas of skills in Design Technology across each year group. They learn about creating products using textiles, develop their technological understanding by creating a working mechanical product and they also develop their ability to cook increasingly complex recipes in our well-resourced kitchen.
Through our curriculum we aim to encourage both independence and team work. Some projects require the children to develop a product of their own and some involve working as part of a team.
All our units have a clear real-life context in order to develop children's understanding of the world we live in. We encourage them to work as scientists, engineers etc. might by carrying out product research, disassembling and building products, making prototypes, testing and evaluating. Throughout this process the children use an increasingly wide range of tools and other resources, including the use of ICT.
We try to include visits, visitors and work with other year groups as often as possible, in order to provide the most meaningful and realistic experience possible.
Here are some examples of the fantastic work our children have produced.
