Over the years the school councillors have worked on various projects in a bid to improve our school and to raise money for equipment and for various charities.
Councillors organised and ran a Fundraising Fun Day in July 2012 when a sponsored obstacle race took place to raise funds for Help The Heroes. We raised £1000 and received a certificate of thanks which is displayed in our reception area. This event followed the same pattern as the preceding two years when money was raise for both Save the Children and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
In the summer of 2013 school councillors organised and ran another Fundraising Fun Day when we raised £800 for Cancer Research. Events included a sponsored obstacle race and the very popular 'Throwing sponges and the Teachers'! (see photos below)
Every year school councillors welcome new parents and give a presentation at the New Parents Evening, explaining what a Rights Respecting School is all about (see copy of presentation below). Parents have the opportunity to speak to the children about many aspects of school life including the school council.
Projects in the last year have included designing a poster to encourage children to respect the quiet area(see copy below), organising a mufti day to raise money for playtime equipment, working on plans for a fund-raising talent show in the Spring Term (see leaflet) and compiling an information book about Agness (at the Tongabezi Trust school) whose education we sponsor.
Another successful project undertaken was a survey to find out what the children think about our new library - which was requested by them - and to enable them to request books which they would like us to purchase, both for the library and the shared area bookshelves (see overview report below). The children have greater access to the library which is increasingly well stocked. Book bags have been provided for all children as requested by year 4 children last year - to enable the children to look after the books when they take them home.
Once again the children were involved in the interview procedure for a new temporary class teacher to cover Mrs White's maternity leave after Christmas 2013. The four children chosen acted in a very mature way and reported back to the main inteview team at the end of the session.
The children in the Lower Juniors asked the school council for a new water fountain and this was finally installed in October 2013. New taps have also been fitted in the Lower Junior shared area.
On Friday 25th October 2013 Josephine (Chairperson of the School Council) handed over a cheque for £800 to Shelley Davies from Cancer Research UK. The money was raised by the children during our Summer Fun Day - which was organised and run by the school council- and will pay for three new scanners.(see picture below)
